In these difficult economic times, our academic institutions are facing major funding cuts. State legislatures have slashed public university budgets, and endowment income is sharply down at public and private institutions alike. As a result, university administrators have been forced to make cuts in cam-puswide services and departmental budgets.These cuts are forcing many departments and schools, including nursing schools, to take hard looks at how they allocate resources. In some nursing schools, the current fiscal crisis may be exacerbating an uneasy tension that already exists between the education and research missions regarding which activity should take priority. As budgets grow tighter, the pressing need to cover teaching assignments may seem more important than the long-term investment needed to sustain a research program.
