摘要

Traditionally, making compost either for horticultural and agricultural purposes or for mushroom production tended to be a smelly business. However, over the past thirty or so years social and legal pressures to minimise compost odours have increasedconsiderably. My last investigation into compost odours and their amelioration was in 1997 (Mushroom Journal No 572) by which time considerable progress had been made both in determining which substances produced during composting were the cause of unpleasant odours ad in ways of managing and minimising their production. Nonetheless pressure from regulatory bodies continues, as can be seen, for example, from brief references to in recent issues of the Journal. Some have been in editorials and there wasone in the Profile of Dr Ralph Noble.
