When the previous International Congress was held in the USA, in 1962, the average yield of mushrooms there was around two pounds per square foot. Now, in 2004, it is over six pounds. With that observation and several others like it illustrating the march of mushroom technology, Dr Mark Wach, ISMS President, struck an historical note in his welcoming address to the more than 600 participants from nearly 40 countries. Composting and cultivation are subjects still in the forefront of attention by the scientists and technologists, but at this Congress they were joined by those offering presentations on molecular biology, medical, medicinal and pharmalogical aspects together with market research and new uses for the mushroom crop.
