Phase III - The Future by Simon Middlebrook of Tunnel Tech Limited

The following article is taken from the presentation given by Simon Middlebrook of Tunnel Tech Limited on the Technical Day of the 2003 MGA Harrogate Conference. I have been invited to give a talk on the future of phase III in the UK. This is actuallya well covered topic. There was a talk on phase III at last years conference. Also in another talk on Virus X, the merits of phase III and also the failures of phase III were discussed. There have been predictions of the wholesale transition to phase III, predictions of wholesale disaster as a result of phase III and the debate continues. In the meantime, production of phase III in the UK which has never actually been high has declined, having peaked at about 2000 tonnes in 1999 it is now down in 2003to approximately 700 tonnes. Meanwhile, Ireland to the west of us has moved into and increased its production of phase III to, I think, approximately 2000 plus tonnes per week. Poland to the east I believe is likely to rapidly develop its phase III capacity whilst nearer to home, the Netherlands is the obvious long term success story in phase III where production has flourished and continued to do so over the past 2 decades. The principle of centralised composting goes back I believe about 40 years in the Netherlands and phase III production has proven to be a logical extension of that.
