In November 2003 Imade my second visit to Mew Zealand, ostensibly to participate in the annual New Zealand Mushroom Growers conference, held this year in the lovely Art Deco city of Napier on North Island, but more importantly to explore the possibility of research collaborations, thereby maximising the outputs for a limited pot of research money. My first exposure to the New Zealand mushroom industry was in 1997 when I worked with John Marshall, at the Crop & Food Research Institute in Christchurch, for 4 weeks on areas of mutual interest. On both occasions I was fascinated to visit many of the farms that make up the New Zealand industry and to compare them with our own, as there are as many similarities as there are differences.
