Do you suffer from attacks of introspection? I do, regularly, once month. If there was more of it about I've no doubt it would attract a natty set of initials, PPPT, pre-problem page tension or something like that. The tension arises largely from the regular need to try to say something informative or constructive, ideally both. To return to the introspection and at the same time to indulge in a little personal reflection, it constantly fascinates me how problems seem to present themselves for consideration in this column. I watch, slightly bemused, as apparently by their own volition the problems grow and emerge, often in unexpected and surprising form. The result is not always satisfactory, certainly not always immediately constructive or helpful.
