Intermittently explored during the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Raton Basin is today one of the most active and successful Coalbed Methane (CBM) exploration and development regions in the United States. Atypical in many respects to other CBM developments in the Rocky Mountains, the Raton Basin affords geologists the opportunity to evaluate multiple thin bedded, commonly discontinuous, shallow drilling depth, medium rank coals.
