The results of hair tube survey work to determine the presence of Red Squirrel Sciurus vulgaris and Grey Squirrel Sciurus carolinensis in woodland sites in the north-west of the Yorkshire Dales National Park*

The distribution of Red Squirrels (Plate I, facing p180) in the north-west of the Yorkshire Dales National Park (YDNP) was, until the late 1990s, thought to have been restricted to the Cumbrian parishes of Dent, Garsdale and Sedbergh. Since that timethere has been an increasing number of Red Squirrel records in adjacent areas of North Yorkshire, notably from Widdale and Snaizeholme.
