METHODOLOGICAL ISSUES CONCERNING NON-WOOD FOREST PRODUCTS IN THE CONTEXT OF CERTIFICATION IN CENTRAL AFRICA

In Central Africa, NWFPs have become central to the process aiming to certify the origins of construction timber, and rightly so, given the cultural and economic importance of non-wood forest products for local populations who are still highly dependent on their ecosystem. However, few standardised methodologies exist as yet to incorporate NWFPs use into forest management plans. This article offers a contribution on this topic by presenting a comparative synopsis of three methodologies currently in use to map and characterise NWFPs used by local communities along the boundaries of forest concessions in central Africa.
