A great deal of progress has been made in self-mode-locked Ti: sapphire laser since it was invented in 1991. It has already found wide uses owing to its broad spectrum ability to generate short pulses, high output power, simple setup and good stabilities. Recently pulses as short as 8.5 fs have been generated by a laser of this kind. By improving compensation for the intracavity dispersion and cavity configuration, we have obtained 19-fs pulses from a self-mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser. The wide spectrum produced by the laser indicates that it is capable of generating even shorter pulses.
