It is known that C_4 photosynthetic pathway contributes to higher CO_2 - fixation efficiency. The enzyme activities required for C_4 pathway are generally present in C_3 plants such as rice with much less amount. But under photoinhib-itive conditionsthe activity of stomata close phosphoenol-pyruvate carboxylase (PEPCase), a key C, photosynthetic enzyme is induced to about six times higher than that of basal activity within 24 hours in leaves from a japonica - subspecies variety Niujiao - biannuo, which has been identified tolerant to photoinhibition. This property suggests that higher inductive activity of PEPCase might correlate to adaptation of rice to photoinhibition. This study is to determine if induction of PEPCase activity is a general phenomenon in rice and to screen germplasm resources with high inductive PEPCase activity.
