All Virginia loggers should be aware that a Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Land Use Permit, also known as an entrance permit, is required when harvesting activities include any work occuring on VDOT property. This includes the right-of-way for any highway within the state highway system. Entrance permits are required when using existing as well as new entrances onto state highways, and VDOT must be contacted before you begin using a new entrance or begin any construction activity to install a new entrance. Loggers can obtain an entrance permit that is valid for a single entrance or a district wide permit that enables the permit holder to open multiple entrances within a VDOT-specified multiple county district. This district wide permit is issued for "installation, maintenance, and removal of temporary entrances onto non-limited access state maintained highways for the purposes of harvesting timber."
