Pharmacy pre-registration trainees undergo professional socialisation, defined as 'the process of inculcating a profession's attitudes, values, and behaviours in a professional. The informal and hidden curriculum (i.e. what is indirectly learnt through an individual's milieu) has a significant role in shaping this process. In particular, exposure to role models in the practice environment serve as salient socialising agents. The aim of this research was to explore which individuals were involved in the professional socialisation of pharmacy trainees, and how they were perceived, during the early stages of the pre-registration year. A purposive sample of pre-registration trainees and their tutors working in community and hospital pharmacy across the north west of England were recruited. Semi-structured face-to-face interviews were conducted in August and September 2011 (during the early weeks of training) following written consent. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically using the framework technique. Interview topics included who works with and supports the trainee, how they impact on development, and perceptions of these colleagues' professionalism. NHS ethics approval was granted.
