Modelling areas of flood risk - development of a simplified method for Regional planning

Mapping of areas of flood risk is an important step in flood prevention and protection. In North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) planning authorities will include information gained from mapping in the Regional Development Plan (Gebietsentwicklungsplan, 1:50 000). For a large number of small rivers, a database sufficient for physically based modelling is not available. Areas of flood risk with 100 year recurrence can be identified for these streams using the developed method, i. e. a combination of computer based geomorp home trie analysis of digital elevation models using geographic information systems and a simplified hydraulic calculation.
