The current Golf R Estate is not the first time that a high-performance engine and four-wheel drive has been offered in conjunction with the Estate bodyshell...WITH THE current interest in the Golf R Estate it's worth reminding ourselves that the concept of a high-performance four- wheel-drive VW Estate car is not exactly new. As far back as 1995 there was a version of the Mk 3 Golf Estate (aka Variant) that was powered by a 2.9-litre 12-valve version of the VR6 engine, in conjunction with a 5-speed manual gearbox and syncro (viscous-coupling) four-wheel drive system, rolling on 6.5J×15-inch rims with 205/50 R15 tyres. With a peak power output of 190 PS at 5800 rpm, maximum torque of 245 Nm (181 lb.ft) at 4200 rpm and with a kerb weight of 1455 kg (3208 lb), it was claimed to be good for a top speed of 138 mph and 0-62 mph acceleration in 8.1 seconds.
