New Golf R Estate

MAKING ITS world debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show (November 18-30) was an estate version of the Golf R, although note that for the US market the Golf Estate is called SportWagen. Not just a concept, the good news is that Volkswagen Retailers here in the UK are due to start taking orders for the new car early in 2015, with first deliveries expected in the summer. Like the high-performance hatchback, the Golf R Estate is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged 16-valve TSI petrol engine developing 300 PS between 5500 and 6200 rpm and maximum torque of 380 Nm from 1800 to 5500 rpm. Driving all four wheels, with torque transferred to the rears through an electronically controlled Haldex coupling, via a standard 6-speed DSG gearbox in the case of the R Estate (the Hatchback Golf R also comes with the option of a 6-speed manual), it is expected to accelerate from 0 to 50 mph in 3.8 seconds and to 62 mph in 5.1 seconds (compared with official figures of 4.9 sees for 0-62 mph for the Hatchback R DSG) and it has a top speed limited to 155 mph.
