IT HAS TAKEN a little while to gather steam, but the market for tuning conversions for the Mk 5 GTI has now really taken off in the UK. We've already featured engine upgrades from AmD Technik, MTM (QST), Forge Motorsport, and - elsewhere in this issue - from West Tuning, and now Revo Technik has entered the fray with a fully switchable software conversion. It's no secret that the EDC-16 ECU used in the new GTI has proved a tough nut to crack, It's not so much the software re-mapping itself, complicated though it is, but the various security systems built in to it, not to mention the fact that Volkswagen has itself issued several software upgrades in the first few months, Figure in the added complexities of a switchable upgrade, where the user can select different performance programs, as well as the complex encryptions necessary to keep the software safe from pirating, and you can see why it has taken nearly 18 months of concerted effort to come up with a marketable solution.
