TRADITIONALLY, most models in the Volkswagen range have always been fairly conservative in appearance. With the exception of the overtly sporty styling of the Lupo GTI, perfectly suited to its performance, the image of the typical Volkswagen has always tended to be rather mature and low-key. In the past, the nearest that Volkswagen has come to fun and frivolity has been set of Teddy bear-styled optional alloy wheels. But now all that has changed, with the introduction of the Polo Dune. Clearly designed to compete with cars like the Rover Streetwise in the new niche market for off-road styled superminis, the Dune combines a tough-looking stance with stylish body panels - more form than function, but eye-catching nevertheless.
