One of a kind: The new Jetta is no longer a Golf with a boot - it is an entirely new model

EVER SINCE THE original Jetta was launched in 1978, it has been a modified 4-door Golf, extended at the back to turn it into a three-box saloon instead of a hatchback. Despite all the efforts of the designers, that is exactly what it has always looked like, a Golf with a boot tacked on to the back. Even when, for a time, Volkswagen called it Vento or Bora instead of Jetta, it still retained its strong, and very visible, connections with the Mk 3 and Mk 4 Golf on which it was based.
