FOR customers who wanted a sporty looking version of the Golf, without the high cost and insurance premiums of the GTI, Volkswagen has traditionally provided a trim level which provides many of the external features but not the full performance. Throughout the first three generations of Golf it was called Driver, with the same trim and wheels as the GTI but with only the standard 1600 and ISOOcc engines. Although there was no Mk 4 Golf Driver, many consider that the non-turbo engined models, the 1.8-litre 20-valve and 2.0-litre models, served much the same purpose, badged GTI but cheaper and with inferior performance to the turbo model.
