Environmentally friendly, high-performance solvents based on renewable biological resources can now be fabricated by economical, efficient and non-waste-producing manufacturing technologies, say scientists from Vertec Biosolvents (1441 Branding Lane, Suite 100, Downer's Grove, IL; Tel: 630/960-0600, Fax 630/960-0660). According to Vertec chairman Rathin Datta, bio-based solvents such as ethyl lactate, d-limonene, soy methyl esters, and biosolvent blends give excellent price/performance and have the potential to replace many of the toxic chlorinated and petrochemical-derived solvents in widespread use today. Vertec, a spin-off company set up to commercialize Argonne National Lab's (ANL) lactate ester process technology, manufactures and sells biosolvents and blends based on three primary ingredients-ethyl lactate, soy methyl esters, and d-limonene- for various applications in industrial and agricultural markets.
