Caval Syndrome & Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension

A 5-year-old, intact male, mixed-breed dog presented to the Texas A&M University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (VMTH) because of hematuria and hemoptysis. The owners reported that the dog began to cough up blood-tinged mucus 8 hours before presentation. The owners also reported seeing blood in the dog's feces and had noticed a decreased appetite for approximately 24 hours. The patient was lethargic, depressed, and dyspneic on presentation (see Vital Signs on Presentation). There was no historyof heartworm prevention. The rabies vaccination history was current.
