Heartworm disease continues to be a serious, widespread infectious disease. In endemic areas, the prevalence of heartworm infection in cats is at least 5% to 15% of that in unprotected dogs. Dogs are a reservoir for the agent of heartworm disease; cats are more resistant to disease.
