Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen normally found on the skin, nasal cavity, nasopharynx, and perineum of humans and animals. S. aureus is a gram-positive, coagulase-positive, noncorrelating cocci found singly or in pairs, short chains, or irregular clusters. The virulence factors found in S. aureus allow it to adhere to environmental surfaces and damage or avoid the immune system. In addition, the organism can cause toxic effects,1 thereby allowing animals or humans to be asymptomatic carriers and transmit the organism to other animals or humans or throughout the environment without knowing they are the source of contamination.
