Maggie Mae, a 5-year-old, 13-lb (5.9 kg), spayed shih tzu, was rescued to live the life of a lapdog in May 2005. About a year later, her groomer noticed that Maggie was sensitive in the area of the mid-back. Maggie soon became tentative about being touched on the back; had episodes of shaking, ataxia, and hiding; and eventually began to avoid human contact. After evaluation by her primary veterinarian and surgical specialists, Maggie underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the thoracic and lumbosacral spine for confirmation of the diagnosis of intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) and localization of the herniation.
