Many guinea pigs, rabbits, and ferrets are presented to veterinary clinics with diseases attributable to parasites. Although these small mammals can become infected with various endoparasites, problems related to ectoparasites are more commonly seen. The affected pets are often plagued by severe pruritus with significant secondary skin disease. Endoparasite infections, on the other hand, are not as common; however, these infections can vary in severity from mild clinical signs to fatal disease. By using basic diagnostic skills, veterinary technicians can be instrumental in determining the underlying cause of small mammal skin and gastrointestinal problems.
