Research in humans has shown that nutrition plays a significant role in helping to prevent and manage some common diseases The same is true for companion animals, Like their counterparts in human medicine, more veterinarians today are recommending a change in diet as part of the therapeutic plan for their patients. This article discusses renal disease, diabetes mellitus, and obesity -- three diseases commonly seen in companion animals -- with a focus on the role that nutritional therapy can play in the management of each.
