Apprehending aphids: new aphid-control material registered for use on tobacco

Tobacco growers have a new option for aphid control this season. Fulfill, a new aphicide from Novartis Crop Protection Inc., recently received EPA registration for use on tobacco. The active ingredient in Fulfill, pymetrozine, is a unique compound, which offers a different mode of action than any other insecticide registered for use. Affected insects stop feeding on plant tissue within a few hours after exposure, which results in mortality due to starvation. Plant damage is abruptly halted, althoughaphids may stay on the plant for several days. Fulfill penetrates the leaf tissue and forms a reservoir of active ingredient that can provide up to two weeks of residual protection. It has been effective against aphids that feed on upper and lower leafsurfaces.
