Online learning systems: highlights of the TechCast project

摘要

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to describe a line of research for developing "online learning/research systems",.Design/methodology/approach - To illustrate this approach, the paper describes a research project that pools the knowledge of 100 experts working online to forecast breakthroughs in all fields of technology. Findings - The paper finds that online learning/research systems offer great advantages for pooling the tacit knowledge residing throughout organizations. Research limitations/implications - Formal research studies could be used to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks quantitatively Practical implications - Most organizations do not have access to their members' knowledge, so online learning systems would be helpful in making informed forecasts, evaluating strategies, and reaching decisions.
