Practical implementation and operational experience in biomass combustion based on bubbling fluidised bed technology at Elektrocieptownia Bialystok

Currently the power sector is facing legal requirements resulting from international and national emissions reduction commitments, including those relating to CO_2 emissions dioxide and the necessity of renewables-based electricity generation. Hence the necessity of increased use of different types of biomass and the implementation of different aid programmes. Elektrocieplownia Bialystok SA, a part of the ENEA SA Capital Group, provides district heat to about 75% of Biatystok city. Only recently the entire generation was based on hard coal. For several years, the management of Elektrocieplownia Bialystok SA had been analysing the possibilities of the company's development towards renewable energy sources. During that period, the availability of local biomass and the possibility of its use for generation purposes had been analysed since 2005. Those analyses were completed by engineering and economic analyses and a feasibility study. Due to the positive results, an application was made for EU co-financing.
