Design and operational experience with the combustion of extremely heavy oil residues in the schwedt industrial combined heat and power station

The Schwedt refinery processes heavy oil from West Siberia. It produces liquid gas, propane and butane, 2-star and 4-star petrol, diesel fuel, fuel oil, serveral kinds of bitumen and sulphur. In addition, fibre raw materials (for acrylic and polyester fibres), nitrogenous fertilisers and aromatics are produced. In 1994, 9.4 million tonnes of mineral oil were processed. Already at the beginning of the 90s the decision was made to build two new power plant units because the existing boilers no longer met the environmental requirements. The operation of the new steam generators has shown that also most difficult refinery residues can be coped with, provided the properties of the fuels are taken into consideration upon designing the combustion plant.
