Good quality compost and mechanisation produce good quality wine.

A composting plant used in the Gironde area, France, in 1997, and the quality of compost produced from urban green residues are described. A new prototype equipment developed in Italy for the application of compost in vineyards is presented. The equipment is 2.5 m long and 1.2 m wide and comprises a rigid frame mounted on rubber tyres, a hopper mounted on the frame with spreading or land application means. The efficiency of the equipment, uniformity of manure application and the results were assessed in a St. Emilion vineyard. Economic aspects, prices, demand and future marketing possibilities are considered.
