Operating experience with the two 800 MW steam generators in power plant Schwarze Pumpe

The two steam generators at Schwarze Pumpe represent the beginning of a new generation of brown coal-fired power plants. This ensues from a capacity increase to now 2420 t/h corresponding to an electrical output of 856 MW in pure condensing operation and from the transition to supercritical steam conditions. Thus at present they are the largest brown coal-fired power plants in operation worldwide. Mostly proven technologies were applied for their conceptual desing, avoiding unnecessary technical risks. This includes the once-through circulation technology and the single-pass design. The positive experience from the modification of numerous plants to low-NO{sub}x firing systems was taken into consideration for the construction of the firing system. The subsequent operating experience confirms that the design concept was the right one. The guaranteed operating characteristics are not only reached or partly exceeded significantly, hut promise safe operation in the long run with high efficiency and excellent availability.
