Dealing with feral cats: Part 2

The feral cat trap-neuter-return (TNR) is a well-proven and successful method of control; but only if applied correctly, with emphasis on getting all aspects of the process right. In the first part of this article (October 2009, Volume 23, Number 10),we looked at the trapping process. In this second part, we shall deal with neutering itself and healthy release. Because of the physical constraints on handling feral cats directly, the choice of anaesthesia is restricted mainly to intramuscular combinations involving ketamine. Every effort should be made to determine the individual's weight so that anaesthetic dosing can be as accurate as possible (Figure 1).
