Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate and di-n-butyl phthalate in the tissues of pigs and broiler chicks after their oral administration.

Di-2-ethyl-hexyl phthalate (DEHP) and di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP) were administered orally to 12 piglets at a daily dosage of 5 g each and to 36 broilers directly into the crop at a daily dosage of 100 mg each for 14 days. The animals showed no clinical signs of disease during the treatment. DEHP was detected in blood and urine of pigs, and mono-2-ethyl-hexyl phthalate (MEHP) was detected in blood of broilers. The highest concentration of DEHP and DBP after 14 days of application was found in muscles and adipose tissue of piglets. Total amount of DBP in broilers was 8 times lower than that of DEHP. DBP was equally distributed in all tissues, while DEHP was mainly accumulated in the fat tissue. A high persistence of both phthalates was detected in broilers 14 and 28 days after the last application. DEHP and DBP were also present in detectable concentrations in tissues of control pigs and broilers. Samples collected from commercial feed mixtures used for feeding of experimental and control animals contained both DEHP and DBP (DEHP 0.24-1.77, DBP 0.06-2.37 mg/kg).
