For your library: beard's new edition is worth the price of admission

When James Beard's first edition of Turf Management for Golf Courses was published in 1982, it filled a void in the literature of golf course maintenance that had existed for decades. In the 60 years since Piper and Oakley had compiled Turf for GolfCourses, a few other books had appeared, but none were as comprehensive, scientifically accurate, readable and filled with practical information as Beard's volume. The book found a home in the shops of more superintendents than any other dissertation. In the 20 years since, greenkeeping has been inundated with reference sources. Whereas previously one could barely find a mention of seashore paspalum in the most comprehensive text on turfgrasses, now there are two books on the subject; whereas previously there would scarcely be a mention of masked chafers, now there are several full-color, glossy books about turfgrass insects, and you can not only find a photo of the little bugger, you can check the eggs, pupa, adult, its raster and even two southern masked chafers in the mating process. This is probably more than you ever wanted to know or see, but such is life in the information age.
