Shutt Medical Technologies, the manufacturer of surgical instruments for arthroscopy and endoscopy, has enhanced its line of hand-held forceps and graspers by using a stronger material for the shaft. Shutt used Type 304 small-diameter thin wall tubing in the original design, but found it was not strong enough to resist bending in some aspects of arthroscopjc surgery. It switched to tubing made from Custom 450 stainless steel from Carpenter Technology, a martensitic age-hardenable stainless steel which combines the corrosion resistance of stainless Type 304 with the strength of stainless Type 410.
