Evaluation of winter hardiness of late leek cultivars grown under perforated plastic foil and non-woven polypropylene fabric covers

The aim of studies conducted during 1998-2000 was to evaluate a suitability of late leek cultivars for wintering in an open field and to determine the effect of perforated polyethylene foil with 50 wholes per 1 m~2 and non-woven polypropylene fabricof 30 g centre dot m~2 weight on a winter hardiness. Following cultivars were evaluated: Fiesta, Davina, Alesia, Prospecta, Hibema, Arkansas, and Bartek. During autumn harvest two cultivars were distinguishable Davina and Fiesta, which yield amounted 20.32 t centre dot ha~(-1) and 18.72 t centre dot ha~(-1). The best yielding cultivars after wintering were as follows: Davina, Fiesta, Bartek and Hibnera (20.16 - 21.38 t centre dot ha~(-1)). The application of covers made of perforated plastic and non-woven polypropylene agrotextil allowed to obtain by 50.8 percent higher leek yield in comparison with the yield of uncovered plants, however the kind of cover had no significant effect on the yield quantity. Chemical analysis of edible leek parts made after wintering showed a decrease of dry matter and total sugars content respectively by 25 percent and 22 percent.
