In March, when the United States announced tariffs of as much as 30 per cent on imported steel, the European Union (E.U.) feared that Europe would be flooded by steel imports from other countries that had been priced out of the U.S. market But this side-effect "as not been so dramatic," a top E.U. official said Sept. 25, in Brussels. Accordingly, the E.U. has all but withdrawn its threat of rapid retaliation against the U.S. tariffs. The European Commission (E.C.) the union's executive body, has drafted a recommendation that sanctions involving over 300 million dollars worth of goods should be shelved until the World Trade Organization (W.T.O.) rules on the mater, probably next year.
