HISTORY OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SEVERONIKEL' COMBINE

On February 23, 1939, the first melt of commercial nickel was produced at the Severonikel' Combine. That date has been recognized as the birthdate of the combine. The history of the combine starts in 1920 when, in response to V. I. Lenin, the Academy of Sciences inaugurated geological research in the Kola peninsula. An expedition led by A. E. Fersman to Monche-tundra in 1929-1930 determined the presence of low-grade impregnated sulfide copper-nickel ores. That served as an impetus to researching the riches of this region, so that beginning in 1931 systematic geological surveys were undertaken. The first prospecting was conducted by a team from the Leningrad Geological Survey Trust. In order to accelerate the search for deposits in Monche, they joined with the Apatit Trust at the end of 1933 to set up a geological survey team to operate on a year-round basis. The geological team, led by D. F. Murashev, established the first industrial ore circuit, exposed impregnated ores in Sopche, and a group of geophysicists under L A. Bazhenov discovered rich ore veins at Kumuzhei. Under the direction of Prof. V. K. KotuPski, considerable reserves of impregnated ores were found. Important contributions to prospecting deposits in Monche-tundra funds were made by geologists V. I. Ezdrova, Yu. B. Goluba, G, M. Sheshukova, N. S. Zontov, P. V. Lyalin, and others.
