Sweet and light: how Libya came in from the cold to cash in on high petroleum prices

After years of playing tit-for-tat with various foreign powers, Libya has changed its tune. Implicated in various terrorist acts during the 1980s, the country clashed with the USA, the UK, and finally the United Nations. Then Muammar Gaddafi, the country's de facto leader, made a dramatic volte-face, co-operating with the international community in bringing alleged terrorists to justice and renouncing weapons of mass destruction. Now Libya is reaping the benefits: a number of lucrative oil and gas deals have been signed, refineries are being upgraded, and power generation, desalination and infrastructure projects are under way.
