With almost three decades of experience in the valve business, much of it focused on education, the author is well positioned to highlight shortcomings in people's knowledge. For example, he sees that many engineers and end users place too much faith in valve specifications when it comes to valve selection, whilst manufacturer and distributor sales staff focus excessively on features and benefits whilst inadequately addressing specific application concerns. He argues that there is a fundamental question that anyone involved in the specification, selection or selling of valves for particular applications needs to consider, namely what are the four sealing mechanisms and how should their design impact the selection of isolation valves?
