Traditionally on-off valves have always been instrumented by at least a separate solenoid valve and limit switches. In this instance, the solenoid valve carries out the open and close strokes based on the digital commands it is receiving from the process control system. The task for the limit switches is to indicate the true position of the valve for the control system.
