TAKING A PROACTIVE APPROACH TO EMISSIONS CAN REDUCETHE COST OF COMPLIANCE AS WELL AS ENSURE VALVES AND RELATED COMPONENTS ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR LEAKING HARMFUL SUBSTANCES INTOTHE AIR. The Clean Air Act brought increased awareness and regulation of what industry releases into the atmosphere. With this regulation, a new term-emissions-entered the lexicon of the process industries and the equipment manufacturers that serve them. Some emissions are part of processing chemicals, petroleum, fertilizers and other materials. Others were never meant to be released; these are fugitive emissions that come from process equipment and components that theoretically should not allow emissions. That equipment can include flanged pipe connections sealed with gaskets; mechanical seals in pumps; compression packing sealing valve stems; and the thread sealants in screwed instrumentation piping connections.
