For more than 10 years, Liberase HI (Roche, Indianapolis, IN) was the standard enzyme blend for human islet isolation until it was disqualified for clinical use because of the potential risk of prion disease transmission (i). This major change affected the transplant activities worldwide (2) but stimulated the manufacturing of the alternative products such as Vitacyte HA (Vitacyte LLC, Indianapolis, IN) and Serva collagenase NB1 (Serva Electrophoresis, Heidelberg, Germany) (3, 4). Recently, a sterile Lib-erase, which is free from mammalian tissue (Liberase MTF-S), has become available for clinical islet isolation. This report describes the initial experiences using one lot of Liberase MTF-S (10829200, kindly provided by Roche Diagnostics, Mannheim, Germany) at islet transplant centers of the University of Leiden (The Netherlands), Lille (France), and Uppsala (Sweden).
