The University of Notre Dame in Indiana is implementing a program to extend the lives and restore the performance of steam turbines in its cogeneration plant (Figure). Two steam turbines have been overhauled and are operating, and the third is scheduled for delivery before the end of this year. Elliott is the original manufacturer of these turbines - Dresser-Rand is performing the overhaul. Besides supplying power, the cogeneration plant supplies steam for room heating, domestic water heating, and turbine drives for seven chiller compressors. Generator 5 (Table), installed in 1955, recorded a heat rate of 5,799 Btu/KWh prior to the overhaul. The steam rate was over 30% less than the original rating. Following the overhaul and an ASME PTC-6 performance test in 2005, the new rate was 3,543 Btu/KWh.
