When deciding what constitutes an appropriate and adequate machinery protection and asset management system, plant personnel must consider both economic and technical variables. Often many end-users do not monitor their units to a "highly technical" level for a variety of reasons, including not being "told what is right," as well as buying a protection-management system based solely on cost, and not on value. But in many cases only a "highly technical" system is adequate for that application. Before engineering a machinery protection system, operators need to answer two key questions: 1) Is dynamic (time-related, rapidly changing) data needed? 2) Is it "best practice" to use some form of transducer voting logic?
