In many ways, Xcel Energy (Minneapolis, MN) has been a microcosm of the power generation business over the past 12 months. The strategic actions it initiated reflected the "six Rs" that drive the U.S. power generation business: Retirement, Repowering, Retrofitting, Renewables, Rate case, and Risk management. And there is every indication that all six of these factors will continue to dominate the power generation business in 2011 and 2012, mainly because state and federal regulators have a number of far-reaching initiatives that will critically affect the power-generation business for decades to come.
