Integrally geared compressors: API SPECS EXTEND THEIR APPLICATION TO OFFSHORE SERVICES

Integrally geared (IG) centrifugal compressors obtained their official recognition as a viable technology for critical process gas services with the publication of API-617, 7th Edition, in 2002 (Figure 1). Prior to 2002, many customers had been using IG compressors in critical process applications, however there were no specific industry standards for design, manufacture or testing. In Chapter 3 of the 7th Edition, API awarded IG compressors their own classification for the first time and specified rigorous technical standards to insure the robustness and reliability of these machines.
