MYTH: COMBUSTOR FLAME-OUTS DO NOT CAUSE FAILURES

Most operators of gas turbines (GTs) are familiar with the requirement to maintain exhaust-spread temperatures to within manufacturer- allowed limits to avoid hot-section load unbalancing during operation. Operators are also usually familiar with the phenomenon of combustion rumble and associated case vibrations that can be avoided by proper tuning of the fuel nozzles and combustion system controls. However, few operators are aware of the dangers of intermittent combustion flame-outs as they are not easily measureable and typically do not cause any immediate alarms or shutdowns.
